Age Concern is working with a coalition of other national charities to raise awareness of elder abuse and offer support to older people who have suffered from abuse. Abusers can attack people physically, psychologically, sexually, financially or by neglecting them. Sadly, this kind of abuse usually involves a betrayal of trust either by a family member or a care worker.
Elder abuse is more widespread than most people think, as it is often inflicted upon the most vulnerable and lonely people in society. Most older people who are abused, suffer in their own home, but a quarter of the time elder abuse happens in residential settings including hospitals and care homes.
Support and information is available from Action on Elder Abuse through its helpline, 08 8808 8141, or at, www.elderabuse.org.uk, or Contact Information and Advice.
